Helldivers Film Announced With Fast & Furious Director Justin Lin at the Helm

Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions have officially confirmed that a live-action Helldivers movie is in development, with Fast & Furious director Justin Lin set to helm the project.

The script has been written by Gary Dauberman, known for his work on horror hits like It, Annabelle, and Until Dawn.

Helldivers, developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, first launched in 2015 as a top-down shooter and quickly gained a cult following. However, it wasn’t until the release of Helldivers 2 in 2024 that the franchise truly exploded in popularity.

The sequel shifted to a third-person perspective, selling over 12 million units across PS5 and PC in its first four months, and later expanded to Xbox. With its mix of teamwork, humor, and chaotic alien battles, the series felt ripe for a Hollywood adaptation.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lin will not only direct but also produce the film through his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner.

The movie’s concept will center on elite shock troopers battling alien factions such as Bugs, Cyborgs, and the Illuminate, all threatening the survival of Super Earth. Fans can still expect plenty of over-the-top violence, chaotic firefights, and even the occasional friendly fire mishap, but with a stronger narrative backbone.

Lin’s involvement adds significant weight to the project. He previously turbo-charged the Fast & Furious franchise into a global phenomenon, directing five films that collectively earned billions worldwide. He also directed Star Trek Beyond and is currently attached to other high-profile adaptations, including One Punch Man and BRZRKR starring Keanu Reeves.

Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions have already seen success with video game adaptations like Uncharted, Twisted Metal, and HBO’s The Last of Us. With Lin and Dauberman onboard, Helldivers could be the next big franchise to make the leap from console to cinema.
