Magic: The Gathering is bringing some serious speed to its next crossover. The iconic trading card game is teaming up with Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog for a trio of Secret Lair drops, giving fans a fun and flashy mix of Sonic characters, classic Magic cards, and all-new artwork.
It’s part of Magic’s ongoing “Universes Beyond” series, which continues to pull in major pop culture names—and this time, the blue blur is front and center.
Unlike the recent Final Fantasy set, which came with full decks and a draftable experience, this Sonic collaboration sticks to Magic’s Secret Lair format. That means limited-time, themed card bundles sold directly through Wizards of the Coast—not in regular booster packs.
Each drop features a handful of carefully selected cards with special artwork, and they go live on July 14 at 9 AM PT on the official Secret Lair site. Prices are set at $29.99 for non-foil versions and $39.99 for foils, depending on which edition you want.
The first of the three drops, called Secret Lair x Sonic: Turbo Gear, focuses on reimagining popular artifact cards with a Sonic twist. For example, Swiftfoot Boots becomes Air Shoes, and Lightning Greaves turns into Power Sneakers. Another fan-favorite, Weatherlight, is now Tornado, Sonic’s classic biplane. And thanks to a recent rules change, you can actually run Tornado as your Commander if you’re into that kind of wild deckbuilding.
But there’s more to the crossover than just artifacts. The second drop, Secret Lair x Sonic: Friends & Foes, brings in seven brand-new character cards featuring Sonic, Super Sonic, Shadow, Tails, Amy Rose, Knuckles, and Dr. Eggman. Each one is paired with unique artwork, some of which comes from long-time Sonic artists who are now making their Magic debut.
According to Variety, Wizards designed these drops to work together—so gear from one drop can be paired with characters from another. Think Knuckles equipped with Knuckles’s Gloves (a.k.a. The Reaver Cleaver)—yep, that’s a real combo.
A third drop, called Secret Lair x Sonic: Chasing Adventure, hasn’t had all its details revealed just yet, but it promises to round out the set with more themed content that ties into Sonic’s world.
This Sonic collaboration follows in the footsteps of other Secret Lair crossovers, like Tomb Raider, Jurassic World, Assassin’s Creed, and even SpongeBob SquarePants. It’s part of Wizards of the Coast’s big push to expand Magic’s reach by blending in pop culture IPs under the “Universes Beyond” banner. And based on how fast some of these past drops have sold out, fans will want to be quick when these Sonic sets go live.
According to IGN, Wizards is going all-in on crossovers in 2025. Alongside Sonic, fans can also look forward to Avatar: The Last Airbender and Marvel’s Spider-Man joining the Magic multiverse soon. The studio even teased the return of the beloved “shock lands” in its next mainline set, Edge of Eternities.
While the Final Fantasy set was the first Universes Beyond crossover to be Standard-legal, these Sonic Secret Lair cards will stay in the realm of casual and Commander play. Still, they’re packed with fan service, great artwork, and plenty of nods to longtime Sonic fans.
