Sony has quietly rolled out a new revision of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition across Europe, and while the console looks sleeker with its fully matte finish, the update comes with a controversial trade-off: storage has been reduced from 1TB to 825GB.

Reports earlier this month suggested that a revision was on the way, and now the updated model is officially replacing the previous version on store shelves. At first glance, the console doesn’t look drastically different, but a closer inspection reveals several subtle changes.
In a detailed comparison video, tech reviewer Austin Evans highlighted the most noticeable design tweak:
Storage Reduction
Downgraded from 1TB to 825GB SSD
Usable storage: only 667GB (compared to 848GB in the 2023 Slim)
27% less actual storage than the previous Slim model
Physical Changes
Lighter weight: 2,400g vs 2,556g (156g reduction)
Matte finish throughout instead of glossy panels
Changed USB port colors from blue to black on the back
Internal Engineering Changes
Redesigned heat sink: More elaborate stamping, thinner metal (0.5mm vs 1mm steel)
Reconfigured heat pipes: Different angle and layout
Reduced VRM: 5 modules instead of 7 (some moved to back of board)
Metal fan shroud replaced with plastic featuring PlayStation symbols
3 NAND modules instead of 2 (despite smaller capacity)
Completely redesigned motherboard layout
Performance Results
Power consumption: Nearly identical (213-215W vs 216-217W)
Thermals: Virtually the same, only ~2°C warmer
Fan noise: Slightly quieter on the new model
Evans argued that while Sony has clearly saved money with the redesign, none of those savings have been passed on to consumers. Instead, the console still retails for around €500, the same as the previous 1TB model.
