The Nintendo Switch 2 has reportedly sold over 5 million units in its first month, more than doubling the launch numbers of the original Switch. While the official announcement hasn’t yet been made by Nintendo, this figure was seemingly shared prematurely through an update on the company’s investor relations page, later taken down.
As reported by Nintenderos, the console moved 5 million units globally between June 5 and June 30, 2025. This milestone, achieved in just 26 days, puts the Switch 2 on pace to become the fastest-selling console in history—surpassing both the PS5 and the original Switch in early sales performance.
To put things in perspective, the PlayStation 5 sold 3.4 million units in its first month and took about 2.5 months to hit 5 million, while the first Switch reached 2.74 million in its opening month and needed four months to hit that milestone.
Breaking down the reported sales:
United States: 1.8 million units
Japan: 1.47 million units
Europe: 1.18 million units
Other regions: 550,000 units
Even with some skepticism around the leak—since the figures were later removed—it’s not hard to believe that Nintendo has another smash hit on its hands. The Switch 2 has already outpaced the PS5 Digital Edition and Xbox Series X|S in Japan’s lifetime sales, indicating just how strong the demand is.
While not all third-party titles are currently performing well on the platform, Nintendo’s own games are carrying plenty of momentum. Mario Kart World, for instance, managed to sell over 1 million physical copies in Japan within a month—hinting at a much larger total when digital sales are factored in.
And while there’s still room for Nintendo to bolster the system's exclusive lineup, the early results suggest most players are willing to hop aboard regardless.
UPDATE: According to David Gibson, senior analyst at MST Financial, who asked Nintendo directly about the leak, the company says the data was "unintentionally" made public and it was for "testing purposes only", and is "not accurate and not related to any sales result."
However, Gibson added that he anticipates Nintendo will announce approximately 5.4 million units sold when the results are released in August. Another analyst, Daniel Ahmad, also commented, stating that 5 million units would be too low.
Switch 2 has a good start for sure, but the numbers remain a mystery, at least for now.
