According to reputable content creator Nintendo Prime, the brand-new Nintendo Switch 2 has reportedly sold over 3 million units worldwide in just 24 hours, setting what could be a new all-time record for console launches.

“I have now heard from three independent people that Nintendo have globally shifted over 3 million Switch 2 units,” Nintendo Prime stated on June 6. “This doesn’t include any additional sales made today already and over the upcoming weekend.”

How Big Is This Compared to Other Consoles?

To give some perspective, Sony’s PlayStation 4 sold just over 1 million units in 24 hours during its 2013 launch, and even the PlayStation 5, with all its global demand, topped out at around 4.5 million units in its first two months.

Even the original Nintendo Switch, which eventually became the third-best-selling console of all time (152 million units and counting as of March 2025), took an entire month to sell 2.74 million units back in 2017. The Switch 2 might’ve just done that—and more—in a single day.

What’s Fueling This Frenzy?

The hype surrounding the Switch 2 has been off the charts for months. With improved hardware, upgraded Joy-Cons (although early reports say some of them need replacing already), and an impressive launch lineup, Nintendo fans have clearly been ready to pounce.

Despite some minor hardware hiccups—like defects leading to quick replacements and even early reports of durability issues—the launch hasn't missed a beat. Stores are still seeing healthy stock in some regions, but in others, units are flying off shelves so fast that “out of stock” signs are already going up.

While it’s still way too early to predict if the Switch 2 can surpass the Switch, DS, or the legendary PlayStation 2 (with 160 million+), all signs point to Nintendo being in a dominant position—again. With more first-party exclusives likely coming soon and strong developer support, this console might just be Nintendo’s golden goose 2.0.
