It’s been over two years since Microsoft and Nintendo signed a 10-year agreement to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo platforms, yet there’s still no sign of the franchise on either the original Switch or its newly released successor, the Switch 2. But according to a recent report by Kotaku, the plan is still alive — and news could be "coming soon."
What’s the Hold-Up?
The upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, revealed during Xbox Games Showcase, is slated for release on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, and PC — but not on any Nintendo hardware, old or new. That’s surprising given that Nintendo’s next-gen handheld is reportedly as powerful as a PS4, which Black Ops 7 is confirmed to support.
Kotaku's sources now stated that Microsoft and Nintendo are actively working together to bring Call of Duty to Switch 2. However, the exact cause of the delay remains unclear — whether it’s related to technical optimization, release strategy, or Nintendo’s preference to control the announcement timing.
A Deal Made Under Pressure
This all stems from Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, which closed in 2023 for nearly $70 billion. To ease regulatory concerns over platform exclusivity, Microsoft promised to keep Call of Duty available on multiple platforms, not just Xbox. In February 2023, Microsoft’s President Brad Smith confirmed a binding 10-year deal with Nintendo to bring Call of Duty titles to its consoles “the same day as Xbox” with full feature parity.
Despite that ambitious commitment, no Call of Duty game has yet landed on a Nintendo system. The last time the franchise appeared on one was Call of Duty: Ghosts for the Wii U back in 2013. Since then, the series has skipped Nintendo entirely.
If both companies remain committed to the agreement, as sources claim, then we can expect Call of Duty to arrive on Switch 2 eventually. Whether that debut comes with the upcoming Black Ops 7 or even a cloud-based port remains to be seen.
UPDATE: Activision has now confirmed the news from Kotaku. In a statement with GameSpot, Activision said that they are “committed to getting the franchise on Switch. Both teams are working on it.” Additionally, Activision stated that they “will share details when ready.”
