The Nintendo Switch has officially sold more than 36 million units in Japan, marking another major milestone for the hybrid console that first launched back in March 2017.
This figure includes the standard model, the portable-only Switch Lite, and the premium OLED version.
According to the latest sales data from Famitsu, the Switch family has reached 36,005,504 units sold, to be exact, in its home market.
What makes this achievement even more impressive is that it comes at a time when attention is already shifting toward the Nintendo Switch 2, which launched in June 2025 and has already cleared 2 million units sold in Japan (6 million+ worldwide).
Weekly numbers show the original Switch slowing down, with just over 16,000 units sold across all models compared to more than 40,000 for the new system. Still, after more than eight years on the market, the Switch continues to prove its staying power.
Worldwide, the console has sold more than 150 million units, making it Nintendo’s best-selling home console to date.
On the software side, Minecraft remains one of the console’s biggest success stories. The creative sandbox game has now surpassed 4 million physical sales on the Switch alone in Japan. When combined with sales across other platforms like the PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, and Wii U, physical copies of Minecraft in Japan exceed 6 million units. Factoring in digital sales, the total is expected to climb well past 10 million, making it one of the most successful titles in the country.
