Nintendo Switch 2 Surpasses Two Million Sales in Japan

The Nintendo Switch 2 has officially crossed two million units sold in Japan, according to new data from Famitsu.
What makes this figure even more notable is that Japan accounts for nearly one-third of the system’s six million global sales to date. For comparison, the U.S. reached the same two-million milestone just weeks earlier in late August 2025 (Circana data).
The console has already doubled the sales of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition and outsold the PS5 Pro eight times over. That said, Sony’s base PlayStation 5 remains ahead with a strong install base in the country. For Nintendo to surpass that, the Switch 2 would need to sell nearly four million more units in Japan. Still, given its current momentum, it’s not impossible that we’ll see that gap close in the coming years.
In a recent sales week, the Switch 2 sold around 44,000 units, while the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch OLED both moved roughly 10,000 units each.
Major titles such as Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment are on the way, and those releases are expected to push demand even higher.
Nintendo aims to sell 15 million units in its first year, but the real challenge lies in managing its supply chain amidst international trade policies and production bottlenecks.
Nintendo has struggled to meet demand in Japan, leaving some players unable to purchase a unit. That shortage means the actual sales figure could have been even higher if supply kept up. For you or me trying to grab one off the shelf, it’s been tough, but the upside is that this unmet demand will likely keep momentum going strong into 2026.
