Team Oblivion has won the Apex Legends Global Series Year 5 Championship in Sapporo, Japan, taking home the grand prize of $600,000 after a thrilling match point format finale.
The Canadian team of Bowen "Monsoon" Fuller, Brandon "FunFPS" Groombridge, and Miguel "Blinkzr" Quiles clinched the championship in the 9th and final round of the grand finale, delivering one of the most remarkable underdog victories in Apex esports history.
The tournament took place at the Daiwa House PREMIST DOME in Sapporo for the second consecutive year, with EA already confirming the venue will host the championship again in 2027.
After days of fierce competition in the Group Stage and Bracket Stage, 20 teams clashed in the grand final. The match point format—where the first team to reach 50 points and then secure a 1st-place finish in subsequent matches takes the win—made for an unpredictable, thrilling ending that had fans glued to their seats.
Team Falcons, featuring the legendary Phillip "ImperialHal" Dosen, started strong by winning the opening match on Storm Point. They were the first team to reach the crucial 50-point threshold for match point eligibility after their fifth match, sitting at 56 points with a fourth-place finish.
ImperialHal also achieved a personal milestone during the series, earning his 2000th career kill.
By the seventh match, 6 teams had reached the 50-point mark needed for match point eligibility, including Oblivion, S8UL Esports, Ninjas in Pyjamas, GROW Gaming, and ENTER FORCE.36.
The drama continued escalating when Crazy Thieves and TSM joined the match point party after the seventh game, followed by UNLIMIT in match eight. This meant nine teams were fighting for the championship win heading into the final match.
What makes Oblivion's victory particularly remarkable is their journey to the top. The roster is notable for being the first team from a Last Chance Qualifier to ever lift an ALGS trophy. According to reports, before this championship run, the organization had only earned $10,000 in total Apex tournament winnings. They didn't even have official team jerseys during their Stage appearance, making their $600,000 prize pool claim all the more dramatic.
Blinkzr was named the tournament MVP for his instrumental performance throughout the championship. The team finished with 86 total points, while Team Falcons secured second place with 75 points, taking home $300,000. ENTER FORCE.36 also finished with 75 points but claimed third place based on tiebreaker rules, earning $200,000.
The Year 5 Championship brought some exciting changes, like a brand-new LAN setup, a huge ALGS Open with 160 teams, an updated points system, and a bigger map pool to keep the competition fresh and varied.
