Square Enix has officially announced Octopath Traveler 0, the third mainline entry in its popular HD-2D JRPG series.
Set before the events of the original Octopath Traveler, this prequel is slated to launch on December 4, 2025, across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
Co-developed by Square Enix and Acquire, the franchise originally made waves with its 2018 debut on the Nintendo Switch and later expanded to other platforms. Its sequel, Octopath Traveler 2, received even stronger critical reception — sitting at a 95% reviewer recommendation rate and a score of 85 on OpenCritic. Now, Octopath Traveler 0 builds on that legacy with a fresh yet familiar journey into the world of Orsterra.
Although it shares its roots with the mobile spin-off Champions of the Continent, Octopath Traveler 0 is not a direct port. Instead, it's a console and PC-first experience that expands on the mobile game's story and mechanics while streamlining the narrative for a broader audience.
As per details revealed during the July 31 Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase, this title will feature 30 playable allies, eight-member battle parties, and a central storyline revolving around themes of revenge and restoration.
New Features & Gameplay
Among the standout additions is a town-building system, a first for the series. Players will rebuild a ruined hometown by inviting characters they encounter across their journey.
The popular Path Actions mechanic also returns, letting players influence the world based on their party setup.
Players will even be able to transfer save data from previous titles for extra rewards, though Square Enix hasn’t yet disclosed what those bonuses include.
There’s also a character creation feature, letting you customize your avatar’s appearance, voice, and favorite food.
The game continues to offer strategic turn-based combat with the new skill transfer system, allowing allies to share action skills — adding another layer to party management.
