South of Midnight, previously an Xbox console exclusive, is officially launching on PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2 on March 31, 2026.
Compulsion Games, the studio behind We Happy Few and Contrast, developed the title. It was published by Xbox Game Studios and originally launched on Xbox Series X|S and PC on April 8, 2025, with day-one availability on Game Pass.
Now, just a week before its first anniversary, the game is making its way to two new platforms simultaneously.

The game is set in a fictionalized American Deep South and follows a young woman named Hazel Flood. After a devastating hurricane tears through the fictional town of Prospero, Hazel discovers she is a Weaver, a magical figure with the ability to see and manipulate ethereal threads called Strands. From there, the story pulls her into a haunting Southern Gothic world filled with folklore creatures, family secrets, and grief. It is a coming-of-age dark folktale, and it wears that label proudly.
Gameplay-wise, South of Midnight is a linear single-player action-adventure that runs around 10 to 12 hours. The core mechanics include:
Weaving magic for melee attacks, spells, traversal, and puzzle-solving
Arena-based combat against folklore creatures like the Rougarou and Huggin' Molly
A puppet companion named Crouton that can turn enemies against each other
Exploration across bayou and swamp regions with collectibles and upgrades
Adjustable difficulty settings ranging from Scryer to Grand Weaver, plus custom options
One of the game's most talked-about features is its stop-motion inspired art style, which players can even toggle on or off.
The soundtrack, composed by Olivier Derivière with Southern-inspired lyrics, has also been widely praised.
When it launched on Xbox and PC last year, the game received a Metacritic score of 77 on Xbox and 75 on PC, landing it in "Generally Favorable" territory. Critics praised the art direction, emotional storytelling, folklore authenticity, and voice acting by Adriyan Rae as Hazel.
Some pointed out repetitive combat and linear pacing as minor drawbacks, but the overall reception was warm. The game was called "a charming, soulful gem" and went on to win Games for Impact at The Game Awards 2025, along with animation awards at D.I.C.E.
The PS5 version will support PS5 Pro enhancements with higher resolution and framerates. The Switch 2 version will be digital-only via the Nintendo eShop, optimized for both handheld and docked play.
As for the editions available at launch, only one has been confirmed so far. The Weaver's Edition is priced at $39.99 and includes:
The base game
South of Midnight Artbook
Original Soundtrack composed by Olivier Derivière
The Boo-Hag Comic Book by Rob Guillory
Music Video: Songs and Tales of South of Midnight
Documentary: Weaving Hazel's Journey, Director's Cut
There is currently no mention of a standard edition for the PS5 and Switch 2 versions.
It is also worth noting that this is the first game from Compulsion Games since the studio was acquired by Microsoft back in 2018.
If you missed South of Midnight on Xbox or PC, March 31 is your chance to catch up.
