Square Enix has confirmed that the Octopath Traveler series has now reached 6 million lifetime sales across all entries, marking another significant achievement for the HD-2D franchise.

The announcement comes shortly after the release of Octopath Traveler 0, the latest installment that arrived earlier this month on multiple platforms, including Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

The milestone was revealed through the official Octopath Traveler X account, which noted that this figure encompasses both physical copies shipped and digital sales across all games in the series. This represents a notable jump from December 2024, when the JRPG series had reached the 5 million sales mark.

To mark this milestone, Square Enix is offering big discounts across the series. Both the original Octopath Traveler and its sequel, Octopath Traveler 2, are now 60% off, bringing the price for each down to $23.99.

The series began its journey back in 2018 when the original Octopath Traveler launched as a Nintendo Switch exclusive. The game quickly became a critical darling, garnering widespread praise for its unique HD-2D visual style that blends retro pixel art aesthetics with modern graphical techniques. The first game soared past 1 million sales relatively quickly and eventually reached 3 million units by September 2022 after expanding to PC and other platforms.

The franchise expanded in 2020 with Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, a mobile prequel that introduced gacha mechanics to the series formula. While the game found its niche, the monetization approach drew mixed reactions from fans. According to reports, the title still managed to carve out a loyal following in both Europe and North America despite the controversy.

In 2023, Square Enix released Octopath Traveler 2, which refined the original's concept while introducing more interconnected narratives between the eight playable characters. The sequel maintained the series' core appeal while addressing some criticisms about the first game's more disparate storytelling approach. As per sales data from June 2023, the sequel shipped over 1 million units worldwide within its first few months. The game also benefited from a stint on Xbox Game Pass, which provided additional exposure to potential players.

The newest entry, Octopath Traveler 0, takes a different direction from its predecessors. Rather than following eight separate protagonists, this installment attempts a more unified narrative structure with a custom character creator that lets players become their own hero. The game also introduces a town-building mechanic where players work to restore their hometown, adding a fresh gameplay element to the established formula.

Notably, Octopath Traveler 0 serves as a recreation of Champions of the Continent but strips away the controversial microtransactions that defined the mobile version, offering what amounts to a complete console experience without the gacha mechanics.

According to early sales tracking (Famitsu), Octopath Traveler 0 sold approximately 59,000 physical units in Japan during its first week. Square Enix has made a demo available for the title, and save data from the demo carries over to the full game.

The first game essentially told each character's story separately with minimal crossover, adopting a Live a Live-style approach to narrative structure. While party members could occasionally interact, players were essentially experiencing eight distinct storylines. The sequel evolved this formula by allowing more conversation between party members and weaving a slightly more interconnected narrative, though it still embraced the more independent storytelling approach that defined the original.

The Octopath Traveler series is just one part of Square Enix's broader HD-2D initiative, which has proven remarkably successful for the publisher. The distinctive visual style has been applied to recent Dragon Quest remakes and will feature in upcoming titles like The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales.

With the series now reaching 6 million sales and showing consistent growth with each new release, it seems inevitable that Square Enix will continue investing in the franchise. Whether that means Octopath Traveler 3 or another spinoff remains to be seen, but fans likely won't have to wait too long to find out what's next for this beloved JRPG series.
