PlayStation Blackout Collides With a Loaded Late-August Lineup

PlayStation players have a decision to make this week. A grassroots movement called #PSBlackout is asking fans to log out, power down, and stop spending on PlayStation Network from August 23 to August 30. The timing is awkward, to say the least, because that same stretch is packed with betas, launches, and one of the biggest reveals of the year.

Why Are Fans Protesting?

The blackout traces back to Sony's July 2026 announcement that physical disc production for new PlayStation games will stop entirely by January 2028. Once that deadline hits, new titles will only be available digitally through the PlayStation Store and select digital retailers.

Organizers, including the preservation-focused account Does It Play, are calling the decision the "last straw." Their concerns include:

  • Loss of long-term ownership, since digital licenses can be revoked or become unplayable if servers go dark (as we seen recnly with sudden PSN down)

  • Reduced support for physical collectors and the secondary market

  • Broader worries about game preservation as an industry-wide issue

  • Lingering frustration with PlayStation's live-service focus and a sense that the company has drifted from parts of its core fanbase

The protest itself is simple and entirely voluntary. No logins, no play sessions, and no purchases on Sony platforms for seven days. Organizers timed it for a relatively quiet period to limit damage to third-party developers and publishers while still trying to register on Sony’s engagement and sales metrics.

Whether it actually works is up for debate. Critics point out that a single week of reduced activity is unlikely to change Sony's roadmap, while supporters see it as a way to prove that physical media still matters to a loud and organized chunk of the community.

A related change.org petition against the disc cutoff has already pulled in hundreds of thousands of signatures.

What's Actually Releasing That Week?

Late August 2026 is stacked:

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 kicks off its Early Access Beta August 21 to 25 for pre-order customers on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series. The Open Beta runs August 28 through September 1 and adds Nintendo Switch 2 to the mix, along with a full campaign mission included for the first time in a CoD beta.

  • Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 launches August 27, headlined by the first modern port of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, plus Peace Walker HD and bonus content like Metal Gear: Ghost Babel.

  • Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy also drops August 27, a prequel following a younger Sophia in a story set fifteen years before A Plague Tale: Requiem.

  • Star Wars Zero Company arrives the same day, a single-player turn-based tactics game from Bit Reactor and Respawn Entertainment set during the Clone Wars.

  • Grand Theft Auto VI's Extended Look premieres August 27, debuting on Netflix before hitting YouTube later that evening. Many expect it to drive renewed interest and pre-order activity across platforms, including PS5.

Most of these are multiplatform releases, but they still funnel plenty of traffic through PSN and PlayStation hardware. The MW4 open beta especially overlaps hard with the blackout window.
