Red Dead Redemption 2's current-gen upgrade is still reportedly in development despite the recent announcement of the first game's port to modern consoles.

If you've been following Rockstar Games lately, you probably caught wind of their big reveal yesterday about Red Dead Redemption. The publisher announced that the classic Western title is getting an upgrade for current-gen consoles, and here's the kicker: it's also heading to iOS and Android devices through Netflix.
Now, here's where things get interesting. After this announcement dropped, some folks on social media started questioning industry insider NateTheHate's credibility, suggesting he should find better sources since he didn't predict this particular reveal. But Nate wasn't having any of it. He clapped back on X (formerly Twitter), making it clear that this announcement "doesn't negate" what he's been hearing about Red Dead Redemption 2's enhanced version.
When pressed for more details about RDR2's upgrade timeline, NateTheHate shared some fascinating information. According to what his sources told him earlier this year, the enhanced version should drop a few months after Nintendo's Switch 2 launches. However, he was quick to add a disclaimer that we all need to keep in mind – Rockstar Games does "whatever they want," and with GTA 6 already facing delays, these timelines are basically written in sand rather than stone.
Let me give you some context here. Red Dead Redemption 2 originally launched on Xbox One, PS4, and PC seven years ago, and since then, it hasn't received the kind of quality-of-life improvements that would bring it up to current-gen standards. Remember when Rockstar released GTA 5 Expanded and Enhanced back in 2022 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X? That update brought the decade-old game into the modern era with visual and performance overhauls. Many of us have been waiting for RDR2 to get similar treatment.
The demand for this upgrade isn't just coming from fans either. Back in May 2025, Roger Clark, the talented actor who brought Arthur Morgan to life, publicly called for a 60 FPS upgrade for the game. That's when NateTheHate first corroborated rumors about the next-gen upgrade being in development, alongside that Switch 2 version I mentioned earlier.
Social media users recently pointed out that Rockstar has been releasing one major overhaul annually since 2021, starting with the GTA Trilogy remaster and now with Red Dead Redemption's current-gen port. This pattern suggests they might be gearing up for RDR2's turn soon.
Speaking of the game's success, Red Dead Redemption 2 recently achieved another milestone by becoming the fourth best-selling game of all time, surpassing Mario Kart 8 in total units sold. That's impressive for a game that many feel has been neglected by Rockstar, especially its Red Dead Online component.
