Red Dead Online Receives New Missions, Sparking Speculation About RDR2 Next-Gen Update

Rockstar Games has quietly released a new content update for Red Dead Online, marking the first significant activity in the game since 2022.

Titled “Strange Tales of the West,” the update introduces four fresh Telegram Missions and, perhaps more intriguingly, hints at more content on the horizon.

This surprise move has reignited hope within the Red Dead community, especially since many had assumed Rockstar had long abandoned the online component of Red Dead Redemption 2. The last time Red Dead Online saw a trailer or major update was back in 2021, making this drop feel like something of a resurrection.

The new storyline centers around fictional author Theodore Levin, who is compiling a collection of bizarre and supernatural happenings from across the frontier. Players are invited to help him investigate these eerie cases, which form the basis of the new missions:

  • Strange Tales of The Plague

  • Strange Tales of Modern Science

  • Strange Tales of The Bayou

  • Strange Tales of The Wilderness

These missions can be accessed by collecting Levin’s letter at any Post Office or Camp Lockbox, or directly through the Player Menu.

According to @videotechuk_ on X (formerly Twitter), one mission introduces a zombie-infected mode set in Armadillo, sparking fan theories about a possible Undead Nightmare-style expansion. With its supernatural flair, this update feels like more than just filler content—it could be a testbed for something larger.

Naturally, fans are now buzzing with speculation. Many wonder if Rockstar might be preparing a next-gen upgrade for Red Dead Redemption 2, especially since GameReactor reported back in May that a Nintendo Switch 2 version and an upgrade patch for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S could arrive in 2025.

While Rockstar remains focused on the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI, this unexpected update shows the studio hasn’t completely forgotten its Wild West epic. With Strange Tales of the West labeled as “Vol.1,” there’s a clear suggestion that more is on the way.
