Google is expanding its gaming efforts by bringing Squid Game: Unleashed, the 32-player multiplayer mobile title inspired by the hit Netflix series, to Chromebooks and large-screen Android devices.
Originally a Netflix mobile exclusive, the game is now set to launch on Chromebooks in the coming weeks with updated controls, enhanced visuals, and support for keyboard and mouse inputs.
Developed by Boss Fight Games, a studio under Netflix Games, Squid Game: Unleashed became a global hit shortly after its late 2024 launch, reportedly topping iOS charts in 24 countries. As per Appmagic data, the game has already crossed 20 million downloads — making it the second most-downloaded game on Netflix’s gaming platform, just behind GTA San Andreas with 40 million lifetime installs.
In a conversation with GamesBeat, Marisol Ryu, director of product management for ChromeOS, explained how the ChromeOS Games Optimization team collaborated closely with Netflix to adapt the game for Chromebook hardware. “We started by testing the original Android version, then built a report that outlined necessary changes — from better scrolling and UI tweaks to adding keyboard and mouse support,” she said.
The announcement was made alongside the unveiling of the new Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14, which Google claims is its most advanced Chromebook yet. Ryu emphasized that gaming has become a “key focus” for the ChromeOS team, with millions of users regularly playing both native Android games and streaming titles via platforms like GeForce NOW, Amazon Luna, and Xbox Cloud Gaming.
