Bethesda Game Studios has confirmed that Starfield will continue to grow with new story-driven content, free updates, and gameplay improvements.

The news was revealed in a recent development update video featuring Tim Lamb, lead creative producer at Bethesda.

Lamb explained that the studio has been hard at work responding to player feedback while also planning fresh experiences. “We have some cool stuff coming, including free updates and features the players have been asking for, as well as a new DLC story,” Lamb said in the video.

He also highlighted that "a part of the team is focusing specifically on space gameplay, aiming to make interstellar travel more rewarding." Alongside that, Bethesda is adding new game systems and other “smaller delights” designed to enhance the overall journey.

The studio also touched on the role of community contributions, noting that Starfield’s verified creators will soon deliver additional content. This marks an ongoing push to expand the game not just through official updates, but also through creator-driven projects.

For context, Starfield first launched in September 2023 for Xbox Series X/S and PC, becoming Bethesda’s first new IP in over two decades. Often called “Skyrim in space,” it invites players to explore vast planetary systems, take on missions, and carve out their own story as part of the Constellation explorer group. Since launch, the game has seen steady updates, with its first expansion, Shattered Space, arriving in September 2024. That DLC added new storylines and areas but received mixed reception, with some players feeling it didn’t deliver enough variety compared to other space exploration titles.

Recently, speculation about upcoming features grew after dataminers uncovered references to a “cruise mode” in the game files — something Bethesda quickly removed in a patch. However, the studio has now almost confirmed that the feature is indeed in development and will arrive in a future update.

With The Elder Scrolls VI still in early development and Fallout fans also waiting for their turn, Bethesda’s decision to double down on Starfield may surprise some. Yet, the studio seems committed to keeping its space epic alive. Whether this strategy will reignite interest among players — or face the same lukewarm reception as Shattered Space — remains to be seen.
