Insomniac Games, best known for its critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man series, is reportedly deep into development on a standalone Venom game — but whether it will see the light of day remains unclear.

The latest update comes from The Redacted Guy, a well-known insider in the Marvel gaming community. According to his post on X, the Venom project had already reached an advanced stage of development. Core systems like combat and traversal were nearly finished, the narrative had been polished, and even motion capture work by Venom’s voice actor, Tony Todd, was reportedly completed.

However, the insider also noted a caveat. In his closing remarks, he wrote: “But the game is also small enough where, due to the breach, it could have been scrapped.” This refers to the major data breach Insomniac suffered in late 2023, which exposed internal documents, assets, and unannounced projects.

That incident may have forced the studio to rework certain titles or, in the worst case, cancel smaller-scale projects.

Why Venom Matters for Marvel Fans

For fans, the idea of a Venom-focused game is especially exciting. Venom’s appearance in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was a highlight, and many players immediately wanted more time with the character. A spin-off could give Insomniac the chance to dive deeper into Venom’s unique combat style, darker themes, and chaotic presence in New York City.

As per the documents exposed in the 2023 ransomware attack, the rumored Venom game was positioned as a Miles Morales-style "side game", offering around 8–10 hours of main story content. It was described as a narrative-driven action-adventure continuing the Spider-Man universe, with development originally targeting a 2025 release window.

The leaked materials suggested the story would focus on Venom vs. Carnage as the central conflict. Players could also swap between “Spider-heroes” (likely Peter Parker or Miles Morales) for co-op or mission-based variety. Gameplay mechanics were said to build on Spider-Man 2’s traversal and combat but redesigned around Venom’s brute-force abilities — such as tendril attacks and shape-shifting.

Slides from the breach even included concept art, early builds, and budget projections, showing that strong fan demand, particularly following Spider-Man 2’s post-credits tease, played a key role in greenlighting the project.

The leak also outlined a broader Sony-Insomniac roadmap extending to 2032, including Marvel's Wolverine (2026), Marvel's Spider-Man 3 (2028), a new Ratchet & Clank (2029), Marvel's X-Men (2030), and more. However, Insomniac has not officially confirmed any of these projects post-leak, except Wolverine, and timelines could shift due to the exposure.

While the leak spoiled surprises, Insomniac stated it wouldn't derail ongoing work. No evidence suggests cancellation of Venom, but the breach likely increased security measures and delayed some announcements.

Despite the lack of official confirmation, hopes for the game haven’t died down. Previous reports claim that a new PlayStation State of Play event is scheduled for later this month, where Marvel’s Wolverine will be showcased. While there’s no guarantee, fans are holding out for at least a nod toward the Venom spin-off.
