Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Definitive Edition is officially launching on August 14, 2025, bringing back one of the most beloved real-time strategy titles in gaming history—now updated for modern hardware while preserving its core gameplay.

This remastered version will be available on Steam and GOG for $29.99 USD, with a 30% upgrade discount for those who already own the Anniversary Edition on either platform.

Originally launched in 2004, Dawn of War was a landmark title for both the Warhammer 40K franchise and the RTS genre. Its innovative mechanics, such as squad-based control, sync kills, and base building within the brutal 40K universe, helped it stand out. Over the years, it has continued to enjoy strong community support through modding and competitive play. Now, Relic Entertainment is bringing it back with visual and technical upgrades that stay true to the original spirit.

The Definitive Edition will include all previously released expansions: Winter Assault, Dark Crusade, and Soulstorm, offering a total of nine playable factions such as the Tau, Necrons, and Sisters of Battle. These expansions bring varied campaign structures and gameplay styles—from linear storytelling to sandbox-style conquest—ensuring a comprehensive experience.

As per Relic, players can expect full text support for Simplified Chinese, with most of the original translations returning.

While the Definitive Edition doesn’t add new content, it brings significant improvements. Expect 4K support, updated UI, expanded camera view, optimized pathfinding, and fixes to legacy bugs. In an interview with IGN, design director Philippe Boulle confirmed that balance changes will be minimal to preserve gameplay authenticity, but some quality-of-life improvements like grid key presets and better unit pathing are being added.

Notably, the remaster retains full mod support. Existing mods will continue to work out of the box, a deliberate choice to respect the modding community that has kept the game alive for two decades. Boulle noted that while old mods won’t automatically take advantage of new features, modders will be able to update them as needed.

The decision to revive Dawn of War comes at a time when Warhammer 40K is enjoying renewed mainstream interest. The franchise has seen a surge in popularity through projects like Space Marine 2, tabletop expansions, and even an upcoming Amazon series. According to Boulle, Relic's discussions with Games Workshop about revisiting Dawn of War were mutual and organic—both parties were eager to reintroduce the game to modern players.

The remaster also brings technical fixes to quirks that have plagued players for years. For example, certain multiplayer maps that were missing key structures like Slag Deposits have now been corrected. Additionally, the original cinematic—still considered iconic by fans—has been enhanced to run in beautiful 4K resolution, preserving its impactful storytelling.

Though there’s no confirmation of Dawn of War 2 upgrade or a potential Dawn of War 4, Boulle emphasized that the team’s current focus is on delivering a faithful and high-quality Definitive Edition.

In short, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Definitive Edition is shaping up to be more than a nostalgia trip—it’s a carefully crafted tribute to one of the greatest RTS titles of its time, built for both returning veterans and a new generation of players.
