City Connection has announced the cancellation of Xbox One versions for "Steam-Heart's Saturn Tribute" and "Advanced Variable Geo Saturn Tribute" due to Microsoft's requirements for major content changes.
The developer explained that while they typically adjust content to meet platform standards, the modifications needed for Xbox were simply too extensive.
"We have come to the realization that some significant changes to the content of the Xbox versions are necessary," City Connection stated in their announcement. "It was a difficult decision, but we have had to make this decision."
According to reports, both titles feature elements that likely triggered content concerns. "Steam-Heart's" is a science fiction shoot 'em up game known for its suggestive cutscenes, while "Advanced Variable Geo" is a fighting game with anime-style storytelling that includes clothing damage mechanics during battles.
As Automaton noted, these games feature "scantily-clad characters and erotic scenes, among other suggestive and explicit content." What's interesting is that both titles were already toned down from their original PC-98 versions for modern platforms.
Despite facing scrutiny over their content, the games are still scheduled for release on May 29, 2025, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC in Japan. The developer has made various adjustments, including censoring certain sensual scenes, to align with modern platform guidelines for these systems.
Content adjustments across different gaming platforms aren't uncommon. Each platform holder—Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft—maintains different standards regarding acceptable content. In this case, it appears Microsoft's requirements were stricter than what City Connection was willing or able to implement while maintaining the core experience of these revival titles.
The developer reassured fans that they remain committed to bringing future titles to Xbox platforms, stating, "We hope to continue delivering our titles to you on each platform, including Xbox."
For gamers interested in experiencing these Saturn Tribute titles, they'll need to look to alternative platforms when the games launch next month.
