Resident Evil: Requiem launched as the best-selling video game in the United States for February 2026, topping both the monthly and year-to-date charts, while overall industry spending rose modestly by 1% compared to the same period last year.
That's according to Circana's monthly market report (posted by Mat Piscatella), which also stated that total U.S. video game spending for February 2026 reached $4.557 billion, up from $4.517 billion in February 2025.
Year-to-date spending also sits at $9.256 billion, reflecting a 2% increase over the first two months of 2025.
Breaking Down the Numbers
The bulk of that overall spending comes from content, which covers physical and digital full games, DLC, microtransactions, subscriptions, and more across all platforms. Content spending for February 2026 came in at $4.016 billion, essentially flat compared to $4.030 billion in February 2025.
Hardware was the real standout this month. Spending in that category jumped 22% year-over-year, reaching $326 million compared to $267 million in February 2025. The Nintendo Switch 2 was the primary driver behind that growth, offsetting declines across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and the original Switch.
As per the report, PS5 hardware spending was down 10% year-over-year, Xbox Series dropped 32%, and the original Switch fell 69%. Even so, the PS5 held on to its position as the top-selling console in both unit and dollar sales for the month, with Switch 2 ranking second across both measures.
Accessories, on the other hand, saw a slight dip. Spending in that segment fell 2% to $215 million in February, down from $220 million a year ago. The PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller in Midnight Black remained the best-selling accessory in units for both the month and the year so far.
Resident Evil: Requiem Makes Franchise History
The biggest story in February was without question the launch of Resident Evil: Requiem. The game debuted at No.1 across PlayStation, Xbox, and aggregated PC storefront charts.
Capcom confirmed that Requiem sold 6 million copies globally, making it the fastest-selling entry in the franchise's history.
According to Circana's data, launch week dollar sales of Resident Evil: Requiem were more than 60% higher than those of Resident Evil: Village during its launch week back in May 2021. Unit sales also increased by more than 40% in comparison. Those figures exclude bundled versions.

Several other new releases also made notable appearances. Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined debuted at 9th for the month, ranking 14th on the year-to-date chart. Mario Tennis Fever entered at 11th, though that ranking is based on physical sales only. God of War: Sons of Sparta landed at 14th, while My Hero Academia: All's Justice came in at 17th. The Resident Evil Generation Pack, which bundles Resident Evil 7, Village, and Requiem, rounded out the top 20 at 20th place.
One interesting trend worth noting is that the Generation Pack actually outsold standalone Requiem on Nintendo Switch. The bundle ranked 4th on the platform while Requiem alone came in at 6th.
Two titles saw notable chart movements outside of new releases. Diablo II: Resurrected jumped from 195th in January all the way to 13th in February. The reason was the Steam launch of Diablo II: Resurrected Infernal Edition. Meanwhile, DOOM: The Dark Ages climbed from 92nd on the aggregated PC storefront chart in January to 9th in February. That boost came from Anniversary Sale promotional pricing on Steam through id Software.

A Tough Comparable Against February 2025
Despite the strong debut from Requiem and a solid lineup of new releases, overall content spending ended up flat. That outcome makes more sense when you look back at what February 2025 brought to the table. That month saw the launches of Monster Hunter Wilds, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, Civilization VII, PGA Tour 2K25, and Avowed. By any standard, that was an unusually strong February. This year's lineup simply did not match that level of volume in terms of major releases.
Non-mobile subscription spending was a bright spot, growing 27% compared to a year ago. That growth helped offset declines across other content segments and kept the overall content spending figure from slipping into negative territory.
