Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has now sold over 4.4 million copies, according to developers at Sandfall Interactive.

The game was released on April 24, 2025, two days after The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered shadowdropped, across PC and consoles, with a day-one launch on Xbox Game Pass.

While official publisher reports still list the game at 3.3 million units sold in its first 33 days, members of Sandfall Interactive confirmed the updated number during a conversation with French streamer Antoine Daniel.

In a lighthearted exchange, senior gameplay programmer Florian Torres began with, “Officially…,” only for character artist Amandine Marest to quickly add, “4.4 million.” The pair laughed with release producer Benjamin Dimanche, before Torres clarified: “Officially, 3.3 million, but it’s 4.4 million.”

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based JRPG that blends French surrealism with traditional role-playing systems. Players take on a journey in a richly painted, dreamlike world where each decision affects survival. The game’s unique style and strong narrative have made it a breakout hit, drawing comparisons to modern JRPGs while carving its own identity in the genre.

Sequel Plans Already in Motion

Fans won’t be waiting long for more. As CEO Guillaume Broche explained last month, Expedition 33 is “only one of the stories we want to tell” in the Clair Obscur universe. While he didn’t confirm a release window or gameplay details, his message was clear: this is not the end of Clair Obscur.

Possible Nintendo Switch 2 Release

Some reports also suggest that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 could make its way to the Nintendo Switch 2. However, according to multiple developers speaking at Gamescom 2025, Nintendo’s strict distribution of development kits may be delaying progress on that front.

Expanding Beyond Games

Sandfall’s ambitions for Clair Obscur go well beyond gaming. A concert tour featuring the game’s soundtrack was announced for three French cities, with tickets selling out within hours.

Additionally, a film adaptation of the game had already been revealed back in January, months before the title even launched.
