Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Reaches 5 Million Copies Sold, Dev Teases Major Free Update

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has officially sold over five million copies worldwide, and to mark the achievement, developer Sandfall Interactive is preparing a major free update for players across all platforms.

The update, described as a “thank you gift,” will introduce new gameplay content, environments, and customization options.

What’s Coming in the Free Update?

The upcoming update will expand Clair Obscur’s world with a new, playable environment, allowing players to explore an entirely fresh location filled with new enemies, surprises, and late-game boss battles.

It’s not being marketed as a full DLC, but rather as a meaningful content drop designed to enrich the experience for existing fans.

Here’s what’s been confirmed so far:

  • A brand-new environment with fresh enemy encounters and hidden surprises.

  • Challenging boss battles tailored for veteran players.

  • New costumes for each Expedition member, adding more customization options.

  • Expanded localization, with new languages including Czech, Ukrainian, Latin American Spanish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Thai, and Indonesian — bringing the total supported languages to 19.

  • Quality-of-life improvements based on community feedback.

  • And, as Sandfall teases, “even more surprises” to be revealed later.

The studio also released an image teasing the upcoming content: a child’s playroom featuring a sketch of Verso riding atop Esquie, the adorable creature that’s become a fan favorite (and meme) within the community. While details remain under wraps, the image hints that the update may explore Verso and Esquie’s backstory, potentially shedding light on the pair’s mysterious past.

The Journey of Expedition 33

Developed by Sandfall Interactive, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG blending French surrealism with poetic fantasy storytelling. Since its launch earlier this year, the game has drawn praise for its unique visual style, emotional narrative, and cinematic presentation, leading many to consider it a strong contender for 2025’s Game of the Year.

The game previously hit 3.3 million copies sold within its first month, and its original soundtrack,  composed by Lorien Testard, has now surpassed 333 million streams globally. Sandfall recently announced a French concert tour celebrating the music, alongside a Grammy Awards campaign for two nominations related to the soundtrack’s exceptional composition and production.

When Will the Update Arrive?

Sandfall has not yet revealed a release date for the upcoming update, only noting that it’s currently in active development and will launch “when it’s ready.”
