Hollow Knight has broken its own record on Steam, hitting a fresh peak player count more than eight years after release. The sudden surge comes right after Hollow Knight: Silksong finally got a confirmed release date.

On August 21, Team Cherry announced that Silksong will officially launch on September 4, 2025. The very next day, Hollow Knight spiked to 23,840 concurrent players on Steam, according to SteamDB.

That’s a new high since May 2022, when the game briefly reached around 20,300 players. Clearly, the hype for the sequel has reignited interest in the original adventure.

And it’s not slowing down. Player numbers have been trending upward since the reveal, suggesting that even more fans are jumping back into Hallownest to brush up before Silksong arrives next month.

The big announcement landed during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, where a brand-new trailer for Silksong dropped. For longtime fans, this was a huge moment — after all, the sequel was first revealed back in 2019, and updates from Team Cherry had been few and far between ever since. That long silence left many players both eager and a little restless, so the confirmation felt like a payoff years in the making.

It helps that Hollow Knight has stayed relevant all this time. The game still sits among the top 50 best-reviewed titles on Steam, holding an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating with more than 136,000 reviews. Its tough-yet-rewarding combat, gorgeous art style, and exploration-heavy design have made it a staple for indie fans since its 2017 release.

Looking ahead, Silksong shifts the spotlight to Hornet, a character many players already love, and promises deeper combat, new biomes, and expanded exploration. The game is set to launch across both PC and consoles, making it one of the most anticipated indie releases of the year.
