Roblox, one of the world’s largest gaming platforms, is once again under scrutiny — this time from YouTuber and practicing lawyer Law By Mike, who has announced plans to sue the company over what he alleges is a failure to adequately protect children online.
The move comes amid growing public pressure on Roblox, with over 270,000 people signing a petition to remove its CEO, and the State of Louisiana already pursuing its own lawsuit over similar concerns.
In a video posted on September 1, Law By Mike revealed he is working alongside the legal team of fellow YouTuber Schlep, a well-known figure in the Roblox community. Schlep, often referred to as a “predator hunter” for exposing alleged child predators on the platform, was banned by Roblox last month and served with a cease-and-desist letter. The company accused him of acting as a "vigilante" in ways that "violated its terms of service." This decision sparked backlash, with many community members accusing Roblox of silencing a whistleblower rather than addressing the underlying safety issues.
While Schlep has not yet filed his own lawsuit, both he and Law By Mike are actively raising awareness about what they describe as systemic safety failures. Roblox, for its part, insists it takes child protection seriously. Following Louisiana’s lawsuit, the company highlighted more than 40 new safety tools introduced in the past year, including enhanced parental controls, stricter chat filters, and messaging limits for under‑13 accounts.
However, Law By Mike’s video points to troubling statistics. Since 2018, at least two dozen individuals — including teachers and even law enforcement officers — have been arrested for allegedly using Roblox to groom minors. Roblox itself reported over 13,000 flagged incidents in a single year, up sharply from around 3,000 the year before. Critics argue that with 78 million daily users and only about 3,000 moderators, the platform’s safety infrastructure is stretched far too thin.
Legal experts note that these lawsuits are significant because they target Roblox’s design and marketing practices, not just user behavior. This distinction could weaken the company’s usual defense under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which shields platforms from liability for user-generated content. Courts have previously ruled that misrepresentation — such as marketing a platform as “safe” while allegedly ignoring risks — may fall outside Section 230’s protections.
“In court, the usual defense might not save Roblox. Most platforms lean on Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act… But the lawsuits against Roblox aren’t just about what users post. They’re about the company itself. Lawyers argue Roblox designed the platform in risky ways, marketed it as safe, and then ignored clear warning signs. And at least one court has already said Section 230 doesn’t cover misrepresentation. So if Roblox tells parents this is safe and it’s not, that responsibility falls on Roblox, not the users.”
Despite the controversy, Roblox’s popularity remains untouchable. Just weeks ago, it broke its own record with 47 million concurrent users, surpassing the combined player count of all games on Steam at that moment.
