Roblox is set to overhaul its content rating system, replacing its current maturity labels with official, region‑specific age ratings.

The move comes after months of heightened scrutiny over child safety on the platform, including reports of predators targeting minors, the banning of a “predator hunter,” and even a public petition calling for the CEO’s removal.

The company announced a new partnership with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC), a globally recognized body that works with established rating authorities such as the ESRB in North America, PEGI in Europe, and USK in Germany.

This integration means Roblox games will now carry familiar classifications — like PG, 18+, or R — tailored to the cultural and legal standards of each player’s region.

ESRB ratings displayed: Early Childhood, Everyone, Everyone 10+, Teen, Mature 17+, Adults Only 18+, Rating Pending. Black and white design.

According to Roblox Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman, the goal is to give parents “more clarity and confidence” when deciding what content is appropriate for their children.

Patricia Vance, president of the ESRB and chairperson of IARC, echoed this sentiment, noting that the streamlined process will also make it easier for creators to obtain ratings while keeping parents informed before gameplay begins.

The change is part of a broader safety push. Roblox recently confirmed that age estimation for communication features will roll out to all users by the end of 2025. The company has also invested in facial age estimation technology to help prevent underage players from accessing inappropriate interactions.

When the IARC system goes live, players in the U.S. will see ESRB ratings, Korean users will see GRAC ratings, German players will see USK ratings, and so on. In regions without a participating authority, a generic IARC rating will be applied.

The IARC framework is already used across major digital storefronts and is free for developers to access. It works through a single questionnaire that generates ratings for multiple territories instantly, with oversight from participating authorities to ensure accuracy.

While the effectiveness of these changes will only become clear over time, one thing is certain: Roblox is definitely responding to recent backlash and not taking a hands-off approach like before.
