Nintendo’s newest console, the Switch 2, is off to a record-breaking start. According to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, the Switch 2 has set an all-time launch week unit sales record for video game hardware in the U.S., with over 1.1 million units sold during the week ending June 7, 2025.

This makes the Switch 2 the fastest-selling Nintendo hardware ever in the country, surpassing even the launch week numbers of Sony’s PlayStation 4, which previously held the record. It’s important to note that this figure excludes sales made through the My Nintendo Store, meaning the real total could be even higher.

Mario Kart World Leads the Charge

One of the biggest driving forces behind this explosive start is the release of Mario Kart World, a Switch 2 exclusive launch title. Piscatella revealed that 79% of Switch 2 buyers in the U.S. picked up Mario Kart World either as a standalone physical copy or as part of a bundle.

On the software charts for physical game sales on the new console in the U.S., Mario Kart World is firmly in the top spot. It’s followed by Cyberpunk 2077, thanks to its next-gen updates, and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Switch 2 Edition in third place.

Mario Kart World’s success hasn’t been limited to the U.S. either. Early reports show it has dominated first-week software sales for the Switch 2 in several other regions, confirming it as a global blockbuster launch title.

Global Success Mirrors U.S. Triumph

Nintendo has also released official global figures earlier this week, announcing that the Switch 2 sold over 3.5 million units worldwide within just four days of release. This makes it the biggest global hardware launch in Nintendo’s history, outpacing previous records set by the original Switch in 2017.

It also broke records in the UK, Spain, and Japan as the fastest-selling console.
