Sony’s PlayStation Games on Steam Generate Over $1.2 Billion

Sony’s decision to bring its PlayStation exclusives to Steam has proven to be a lucrative move. According to a recent report by Alinea Analytics, PlayStation Studios’ titles have generated more than $1.5 billion in gross revenue, with Sony pocketing around $1.2 billion after Valve’s cut.

Valve itself has earned at least $350 million, thanks to its tiered revenue share system that starts at 30% and drops to 25% after $10 million in sales, and 20% after $50 million.

Top Performers on Steam

Alinea’s estimates highlight five standout titles leading Sony’s success:

  • Helldivers 2 – 12.7 million copies sold, generating $400 million. This co-op shooter has become Sony’s first true PC megahit, with 200,000 daily players and a fifth of its audience logging over 100 hours.

  • Horizon Zero Dawn – 4.5 million copies sold, earning $170 million. As Sony’s first major Steam release back in 2020, it benefited from pent-up demand and continues to sell steadily thanks to discounts.

  • God of War – 4.2 million copies sold, nearly $150 million in revenue. Its strong reputation and technical polish helped build trust among PC gamers.

  • Days Gone – 3.4 million copies sold, $108 million revenue. Despite mixed reception on console, its survival mechanics resonated with PC players.

  • Spider-Man Remastered – 2.7 million copies sold, $116 million revenue. The strength of the Spider-Man IP and technical features like ray tracing boosted its appeal.

In total, PlayStation-published games are estimated to have sold more than 43 million copies on Steam.

Is the Novelty Wearing Off?

While these numbers are impressive, Alinea cautions that the “novelty” of PlayStation games on Steam may be fading.

“The audience that was once excited to experience these games for the first time has largely been served,” Rhys Elliot, Alinea’s head of market analysis, stated. “Later releases naturally face smaller potential audiences, and our estimates clearly show this.”

As the report noted, God of War sold 2.5x more copies than Ragnarök in the same timeframe, and Spider-Man outsold Spider-Man 2 by a similar margin.

That doesn’t mean Sony is having a hard time. Even with slower sequel sales, games like Spider-Man 2 and Ragnarök still pulled in $32M and $45M, respectively. And when a title clicks with PC players like Helldivers 2 did with its replayable co-op gameplay, it can still turn into a huge success.

What’s Next for Sony?

Sony has been narrowing the gap between PS5 launches and Steam ports, aiming to maximize revenue without undermining console sales. Live-service titles are expected to launch simultaneously across platforms, while single-player games may continue to see a six-to-twelve-month delay.

However, the report advises exercising caution and reconsidering the release strategy, as Valve’s “Steam Machine” hardware could potentially transform Steam into a competing ecosystem.
