Sony has officially declared the PlayStation 5 its most financially successful console generation to date. The announcement came directly from Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) CEO Hideaki Nishino during his keynote speech at Tokyo Game Show 2025.

How Much Revenue Has the PS5 Generation Made?
According to Nishino’s presentation (via IGN), Sony’s Game & Network Services (G&NS) division, which includes SIE, has generated a staggering $136 billion in sales since the PS5 launched in 2020.
For comparison, here’s how previous generations stack up:
PS4 generation (2013–2019): $107 billion
PS3 generation (2006–2012): $71 billion
PS2 generation (2000–2005): $44 billion
PS1 generation (1994–1999): $24 billion
Sony clarified that these figures account for average U.S. dollar/yen exchange rates at the time and reflect the company’s accounting shift from U.S. GAAP to IFRS standards post-2020.
While the revenue numbers look incredible, it’s important to remember that Sony’s $136 billion figure covers the entire G&NS business, not just PS5 hardware and software. This means ongoing sales from PS4 consoles and games are still contributing.
That said, the PS5 itself has sold over 80.3 million units worldwide as of June 30, 2025, according to Sony’s latest financial report. That’s an impressive climb, though it still trails the PlayStation 4’s all-time sales of 117.2 million units.
We’re now approaching the halfway point of the PS5 generation, and naturally, speculation about what comes next is heating up. Industry chatter has already pointed toward the possibility of a PlayStation 6, with some rumors suggesting Sony could experiment with both a traditional home console and a new handheld device. Nishino, however, chose not to address these rumors during his keynote.
