Taylor Sheridan and Peter Berg Reunite for Call of Duty Movie Adaptation

The news was first reported by Deadline and later confirmed by Activision, giving fans a clearer picture of who will be steering one of gaming’s biggest franchises onto the big screen.

Berg and Sheridan aren’t strangers to collaboration either. They previously worked together on Hell or High Water (2016) and Wind River (2017), both of which earned critical acclaim for their gritty storytelling and grounded tone.

Sheridan’s involvement is particularly noteworthy. Known for penning Sicario and creating the hit series Yellowstone and its spin-offs, Sheridan has a knack for tense, character-driven narratives. That experience could translate well into the morally complex world of Call of Duty, especially since the Modern Warfare reboot series has already drawn inspiration from Sicario.

Berg, on the other hand, brings a proven track record of directing high-intensity action films like Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, and Patriots Day. His style seems tailor-made for the kind of large-scale, boots-on-the-ground action sequences fans expect from the franchise.

Activision and Paramount first announced their partnership to develop a Call of Duty film back in September. Paramount CEO David Ellison even described the project as a “passion project,” signaling the studio’s commitment to treating the adaptation seriously. Interestingly, reports surfaced that Activision had previously turned down a pitch from none other than Steven Spielberg, which shows just how carefully the publisher has been weighing its options.

Right now, there’s no word on whether the film will adapt a specific storyline from the games like Modern Warfare or Black Ops, or if it will tell an original story set in the same universe. Personally, I’d love to see an original narrative that captures the spirit of the games without being tied down to recreating missions we’ve already played. Still, either approach could work if handled with the right balance of spectacle and substance.

This announcement also comes at a time when video game adaptations are thriving. Microsoft’s properties, in particular, have found success across film and TV. The Minecraft Movie raked in nearly $950 million at the box office, making it the second-highest-grossing video game film ever, just behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Meanwhile, Amazon’s Fallout series became a breakout hit on Prime Video, pulling in over 100 million viewers and securing a second season set to premiere on December 17, 2025. A Wolfenstein TV series is also reportedly in development, while Netflix is working on both a Gears of War movie and an animated series.

For now, we’ll have to wait for more details on casting and story direction, and seeing how fast the project is moving, we’ll likely get that soon, too.
