Gears of War: E-Day Takes the Series Back to Its Roots
Gears of War: E-Day arrives October 6 on Xbox Series X/S and PC, with day-one Game Pass access. There is no PS5 version. Premium Edition owners get early access starting October 1.
This is a prequel set 14 years before the original game. Young Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago return to Kalona just as the Locust erupt on Emergence Day. The campaign stays with Bravo Squad, which also includes Lucas Reyes and Mags Carter, and never leaves their point of view. It covers roughly three days of the city's collapse, not a single night.
The cover shooter has been rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5. The old roadie run is gone. Players can now sprint, slide, jump, and use lower cover. The campaign is linear, though some neighborhoods open into larger combat arenas. It should run about 14 hours.
Multiplayer is stacked too. The campaign supports solo play, 2-player split-screen, and 4-player online co-op. Horde Siege is a class-based PvE mode with larger maps and world bosses. Refined 4v4 Versus rounds it out. According to reports, The Coalition has also redesigned the Locust to feel threatening again, and the tone leans darker and more horror-heavy.
Will Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Win Players Back?
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series, and Switch 2. Campaign early access starts October 16 with some editions. It is not a day-one Game Pass release.
The story runs on two main threads. In Korea, Private Park Hyun Jun and his squad face a full-scale North Korean invasion. Elsewhere, Captain Price is a fugitive after assassinating General Shepherd in Modern Warfare III. He is hunting a threat tied to a weapon and a figure called "The Archer." Missions also take players to New York, Paris, and Mumbai. Some reporting mentions a third perspective from the North Korean side.
Multiplayer launches with 12 6v6 maps, Gunfight maps, larger Big War maps, and a rotating arena mode called Kill Block. Movement is more fluid. A system called "Ballistic Authority" aims for less random bloom and more physical gun handling. The returning DMZ extraction mode is the third pillar. After a couple of uneven entries, many players are hoping this one gets the series back on track.
Why Is Phantom Blade Zero Getting So Much Hype?
Phantom Blade Zero arrives October 29 on PS5 and PC. Developed by S-Game, it is a dark wuxia action RPG that the team describes as "kungfupunk."
Players control Soul, once the top assassin of The Order. He is framed for killing the patriarch and nearly dies. A mystic healer saves him, but he has only 66 days to live. He must find a cure and uncover the conspiracy behind his framing in the underworld of Wulin. Donnie Yen serves as a combat consultant and also appears as a character.
This is not a full open world. It is built from eight connected, handcrafted regions. Combat offers more than 30 primary weapons and more than 20 Phantom Edges, plus styles like Drunken Sword and a resource called Sha Chi. Difficulty options include the cinematic Wayfarer, the fighting-game-like Hellwalker, and a 66 Days mode where deaths burn time off the countdown. Expect a main story of roughly 20 to 30 hours. It runs on Unreal Engine 5, and early impressions suggest it looks and moves unlike anything else this year.
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve Returns After Seven Years
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve takes off October 1 or 2, on PC, PS5, and Xbox. It is the first mainline entry in seven years.
The Republic of Sotoa blitzes the Federation of Central Usea. You wash up on the carrier Endurance and fly as weapons systems officer for Jan "Rex" Cope, the propaganda ace known as the Wings of Theve. His legend is fake. After he dies, you inherit the callsign and have to make the lie real. First-person cutscenes put you in the crew's rooms and on the deck instead of relying on still-image briefings. Sunao Katabuchi wrote the screenplay.
The arcade flight combat features more than 30 planes across four roles. Players can damage enemy aircraft anywhere, not just at set hitboxes. Dual special weapons, debris that can wreck other planes, and stronger weather handling add variety. Missions mix dogfights, ground attacks, and superweapon set pieces. DualSense haptics are used for throttle and high-G turns.
Castlevania: Belmont's Curse Is the 2D Return Fans Wanted
Castlevania: Belmont's Curse launches October 15 on PC, PS5, Xbox, and Switch. Konami teamed up with Evil Empire and Motion Twin, two teams tied to Dead Cells.
The story is set in 1499, 23 years after Castlevania III. Paris is burning and Dracula's castle has appeared in the city. Players control Rose Belmont, daughter of Trevor and Sypha. A curse is eating her arm while she investigates a letter from the Bishop. Bosses include Death, Medusa, Carmilla, and new figures like Joan of Arc.
This is a traditional Metroidvania, not a roguelike. Whip swinging handles both combat and traversal. Rose can slide, backdash, and mix seven weapon types with Relics. Defeated bosses become Arcana sealed in tarot cards. These are spells and special actions you upgrade by completing "Acts of Mercy." The movement is faster and more fluid than classic Symphony-style play, and that is by design.
Star Wars: Galactic Racer and Final Fantasy Resonance Bring Big Swings
Star Wars: Galactic Racer arrives October 6 on PC, PS5, and Xbox. The setting is the lawless Outer Rim after the Empire's fall, where the Galactic League runs an underground, unsanctioned circuit. Racing goes beyond pod racers, with land speeders, skim speeders, and speeder bikes. A story campaign follows Shade and his ruthless rival Kestar. Competitive multiplayer supports up to 12 online players on PS5. Hands-on coverage has pointed to a fast, run-based structure with Burnout-inspired takedowns.
Final Fantasy Resonance launches October 22 on PC, PS5, Xbox, and Switch 2. It is an HD-2D take on the first story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. It is not a simple mobile port. According to reports, it has been extensively rebuilt with "cinematic pixel" techniques that blend pixel art with dynamic 3D camera work. Cloud, Tidus, Warrior of Light, and Sephiroth all appear. Think of it as Octopath Traveler meeting Final Fantasy.
More Big Names Worth Planning Around
Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen lands October 9 on PC, PS5, Xbox, and Switch 2. The expansion is set in frozen northern Norgan. The Arisen teams up with a mysterious pursuer named Eir against the heartless Fallen Dragon. A wolf companion called Freki joins the fun. The new campaign runs an estimated 15 to 20 hours, with 12 Lost Rites challenge dungeons and more vertical exploration. It costs $29.99 on existing platforms. On Switch 2, a $49.99 bundle includes the base game and expansion. Capcom is also shipping quality of life updates like more save slots and six weapon skill slots.
Enshrouded hits version 1.0 on October 15 after a long stay in early access. You play as a Flameborn, the last ember of a dying race, pushing back a corrupting fog called the Shroud. Voxel building, real-time combat, and up to 16 player co-op make it one of the standout survival crafting games around.
Planet Zoo 2 arrives October 13 on PC, PS5, and Xbox. It adds fully aquatic species and customizable aquariums, flying species with physics-based aviaries, and more reactive animal behavior. Wildlife Reserves let players release animals into larger natural environments. Career, Franchise, and Sandbox modes are all included.
Valor Mortis, from the Ghostrunner team at One More Level, also lands October 13. This first-person Soulslike is set in an alternate 19th century Europe where Napoleon's endless war has unleashed a supernatural plague. Parries, dashes, finishers, and supernatural abilities define the combat. The main story runs about 20 hours, and it launches at $40.
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort and The Wolf Among Us Remastered
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort arrives October 22 as a Switch 2 exclusive. Set on Wuhu Island, it offers 12 sports using Joy-Con 2 motion and mouse controls. The lineup includes Archery, Boxing, Table Tennis, Tennis, Volleyball, Bowling, Basketball, Golf, Thumb Wrestling, Skateboarding, Power Cruising, and Prop Plane, with Jump Rope as a warm-up. Local play supports 1 to 4 players, and online play is included. Later details added free-roam around Wuhu Island and an "Island Crown" ranked single-player track.
The Wolf Among Us Remastered arrives October 29 across PC, PS5, Xbox, Switch, and Switch 2. The story is unchanged. Bigby Wolf, sheriff of Fabletown in 1980s Manhattan, investigates a murder that exposes a darker conspiracy among fairy-tale immigrants. The remaster adds higher-resolution visuals, better animation and audio, accessibility work, a toggleable black-and-white Noir Mode, and over an hour of behind-the-scenes extras. The Wolf Among Us 2 is still aimed at 2027.
Which Indie Games Should You Wishlist This Month?
October is also loaded with smaller releases. Order of the Sinking Star from Jonathan Blow arrives October 8 with over 1,000 handcrafted puzzles. The Witch's Bakery on October 14 follows a joyful witch who opens a bakery in modern Paris.
Hubert on October 12 puts you in the paws of a shepherd dog guiding a flock across the northern wilderness.
Horror fans have plenty to choose from. Silver Pines is a survival horror Metroidvania set in a half-abandoned American town. Tenebris Somnia mixes retro pixel art with live action cutscenes. Night Plane turns a doomed flight into a job sim.
